I think it’s the second phrase, but my dad thinks it’s the first one.
You would indeed be correct. To quote Fowler:
Both expressions have the same origin in the word while, but it should be noted that “awhile” is strictly adverbial whereas “a while” is a noun phrase…
So if we look at the sentence…
“it [noun] has been [verb] awhile...
Rage against the answering machine
I know it’s semantic nit-picking, but I really can’t stand it when someone’s voicemail or answering machine says: “You’ve reached [name].” It’s painfully obvious that I haven’t reached [name] at all. I have reached their voicemail, and unless [name] was a robot all along, [name]’s voicemail is not part of [name].
All I want to know is that...
I'll probably only work two or three hours...
But I’ll earn way more than I did working six and a half hours today. I’ll probably find this work easier and feel less drained by it. Wages are interesting things.

Ah weddings....
I am now totally knackered after spending a 13 hour day shooting yesterday. Tomorrow I have the rush shift again at the cafe, as well as dropping off all my photo gear and beginning to sift through and back up the 1000+ photos I took at the wedding. Better sleep well tonight, might take something to ensure that.
I seem to be a glutton for punishment
So even after a crazy 3 hour shift and having not been home since due to a trip across the city to pick up some more camera gear, I agreed to help out this afternoon.
Did I mention I was slightly manic last night so I didn’t sleep much? Oh and there’s that wedding tomorrow. I am truly insane.
That was a hectic 3 hour shift
First we had five staff on, then one went home sick leaving us with four, then one went on break leaving us with three, and it was my second shift. It was not pretty.

I worked a trial shift at my favourite cafe today.
I’m not sure how I feel about it.
I mean, I like the cash-flow; that’s always good in my books. Even though the rate is considerably below what I generally pitch myself at in the IT industry, at the moment work is work.
