Dress me!

I booked my tickets for my trip to the US this week. Now I’m sorting out logistics: you know, minor things like how I won’t freeze to death in the 5 weeks up to new years that I’ll be there. I’ve been looking at some lovely looking pea-coats and trenches, but I’m really wondering what’s going to be warm enough.

I live in a place where it’s considered viciously cold if the mercury dips to the single digits (in Celsius, which is about 48 Fahrenheit), so I’m looking at places like Portland and Vancouver and getting frost-bite just thinking about it. What am I going to need? What do you suggest? I’m open to packing warm enough clothes to get me to the first mall and picking up some warm clothes there, but I suppose there is a certain attraction to not having that stress on my jetlagged brain.

So any advice?
