When did we decide to start calling it a “beverage”?

I’m someone who likes to use out-of-register words in social situations (eg. perambulate instead of walk). It however tends to be a technique to lighten the mood or a way of endearing myself to the people around me.

Why in the US do you call it a “beverage” and not a “drink”? If I offer someone a “drink”, is it pre-loaded such that it becomes an alcoholic drink? I thought language in the US was going the other way….
